If you’re thinking about learning a skilled trade, gas engineering remains one of the most reliable and rewarding options. It’s a career that brings real job security, hands-on work, and the satisfaction of doing something practical that matters every day.

Whether you’ve just left school, are retraining after a career change, or want to add a new trade to your belt, starting gas engineer training is more straightforward than you might think. With the right course and support, you can begin building a future in the trade right now.

What You Need Before Getting Started

You do not need to have previous experience in gas, plumbing or electrical work to begin training as a gas engineer. Most people start with little more than a strong interest in practical work and a willingness to learn.

Useful traits and skills include:

  • Basic problem-solving ability
  • A steady and careful approach to work
  • Comfortable with hands-on tools and equipment
  • Good timekeeping and communication skills
  • Reasonable fitness to carry out physical tasks

The technical knowledge and industry standards are all taught during training, so the main thing you need to bring is commitment. If you’re ready to learn, we’ll guide you through the rest.

Training Options That Help You Qualify

There are two main ways to train as a gas engineer, and both lead to recognised qualifications that allow you to work in the trade legally.

Gas Managed Learning Programme (MLP)

The Gas MLP is designed for new entrants, including career changers and those without any prior gas experience. It’s a structured course built to provide a full foundation in domestic gas work.

Delivered at our Stafford training centre, the programme includes classroom learning, hands-on practical sessions, and real-world work experience. You will be supported throughout by qualified trainers who are also experienced engineers.

During the MLP, you will cover:

  • Gas safety legislation
  • Combustion, ventilation and flue systems
  • Pipework, pressure testing and purging
  • Installation of heating and hot water systems
  • Electrical components and controls
  • Practical fault finding and appliance servicing

A key part of the programme involves supervised work experience, where you apply your training on the job under the guidance of a registered gas engineer. This experience is recorded in an online portfolio, which forms part of your assessment.

Once you complete the course and pass your assessments, you can apply for your ACS qualification, followed by Gas Safe registration.

Level 3 Gas Engineering Apprenticeship

This route is ideal if you prefer to learn on the job while earning a wage. Apprenticeships combine work-based learning with structured training off the job.

At Staffordshire Training Services, we offer this Level 3 gas apprenticeship in partnership with Logical Training. It typically runs over 18 months and is fully funded for eligible learners. You will be employed while learning, gaining experience with real customers and equipment under the supervision of experienced professionals.

This option suits school leavers or those already working with a gas employer. Apprenticeships also lead to ACS certification and Gas Safe registration.

Timeframes For Training and Qualification

The time it takes to become qualified depends on the route you take and your availability for work experience.

  • The Gas MLP takes around 12 months, depending on how quickly you complete your portfolio and assessments
  • The Apprenticeship route generally takes 18 months, combining work with classroom sessions
  • After your training, you will complete ACS assessments. Once passed, you can apply to join the Gas Safe Register

We offer support throughout the entire process to help keep you on track and confident as you move forward.
